Rat or Mouse Identification Guide

This guide can help you compare common signs before booking, but one clue is not always enough for a certain identification. Avoid handling droppings or nesting material with bare hands. Record the location, size and pattern, then let the on-site evidence guide the treatment.

Signs more commonly associated with mice

  • Small, dark droppings often compared with grains of rice.
  • Fine gnawing on packets, cardboard or light materials.
  • Activity inside kitchen cupboards, behind units, in lofts or within wall and floor voids.
  • Shredded paper, fabric or other light nesting material.
  • Light scratching or scampering sounds when the building is quiet.

Signs more commonly associated with rats

  • Larger droppings and heavier gnawing.
  • Burrows or disturbed ground near buildings, boundaries, sheds or bins.
  • Greasy travel marks along established routes.
  • Activity around gardens, drains, outbuildings, stored feed or waste areas.
  • Heavier movement sounds in accessible voids or roof spaces.

Evidence that can be misleading

Noise alone may be caused by rodents, birds or squirrels. A single dropping can be old, and a hole does not prove what is using it. The place where evidence appears may also be different from the entry point. Clear photographs and a note of when activity occurs can help, but an inspection may still be necessary.

What to tell us

  • The room, garden, loft, garage or outbuilding affected.
  • When the signs were first noticed and whether activity is continuing.
  • Approximate droppings size, any gnawing and the time noises are heard.
  • Whether pets, children or vulnerable occupants are present.
  • Any previous bait, traps or building work.

Choose the next step

Read our rat-control page or mouse-control page for species-specific information. If you are not sure, request the general domestic rodent service; rats and mice use the same Square booking option and we will assess the evidence.
