Grey squirrels can enter lofts, roof spaces and outbuildings, where their movement and gnawing may become disruptive. J Alvey Pest Control provides squirrel investigation and control across our North West operating area. We first establish what is using the space and where activity is taking place, then explain the appropriate control and follow-up. Our family-run business has served homes and organisations since 1979 and is BPCA accredited.
Signs of squirrel activity
Customers commonly report heavier movement or scratching from a loft or roof space, disturbed insulation, gnaw marks, droppings or nesting material. Noise alone is not a certain identification: birds, rats and mice can also use hidden parts of a building. The time, location and character of the activity all help, but we base treatment on an inspection rather than an assumption.
When booking, tell us where the noise or signs occur, whether the loft hatch is accessible and whether you have seen an animal enter or leave. Photographs of external damage or a possible entry point can be useful if they can be taken safely from ground level.
How squirrel control works
The Square service is an investigation and trap set-up visit. We inspect the accessible area, assess the evidence and set up an appropriate trapping plan where squirrel activity is confirmed. Follow-on attendance and the number of animals involved depend on what is found at the property.
We may also point out visible access or maintenance issues that could be contributing to the problem. Do not seal a suspected route before the inspection, as this can make it harder to understand the activity or leave an animal on the wrong side of the opening. Any building repair remains separate from the control service unless it has been specifically agreed.
Preparing for the visit
Provide safe access to the loft hatch, outbuilding or affected room and remove obstacles immediately around the access point where practical. Keep children and pets away from the area and from any equipment placed during the visit. Do not enter an unsafe roof space or climb outside to investigate. Tell us about restricted access, alarms, tenants or other site arrangements before the appointment is confirmed.
Price and booking
The current online price is £75 for investigation and trap set-up, plus £40 for each squirrel caught. The final scope depends on confirmed activity, access and follow-up required. Online appointment times are requests and are checked against the route before confirmation, so detailed access notes are important.
Grey squirrel control FAQs
Is every loft noise caused by a squirrel?
No. Birds and rodents can create similar sounds. We look at the evidence and location before selecting a control method.
Will one visit be enough?
The first visit covers investigation and set-up. The number of follow-ups depends on activity at the individual property, so we will explain the likely next step after the inspection.
Can you deal with rats or mice in a loft?
Yes. If the evidence points to a rodent, see our rodent control service.
